Word and PowerPoint templates
Some documents already exist as a Word file that legal signed off, or as a slide deck sales keeps up to date. Instead of rebuilding them in HTML, type the tags into the file and let Formfeed fill it. The same API also turns Word, Excel and PowerPoint files into PDFs.

Your file, the tags you know
Type the tags into the document in Word or PowerPoint and upload it as a Word document or PowerPoint presentation. Jinja2, Liquid and Handlebars work as in HTML templates, with the same helpers for money, dates and translations. The formatting of the file stays as it is, and Word’s autocorrect inside a tag, such as curly quotes, is undone for you.
- Loops and conditions. A block tag alone in its paragraph repeats or hides whole paragraphs; alone in a table row, it repeats the rows between its tags. Short conditions stay inline.
- Everywhere in the file. Tags work in Word headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes, and in slide text, tables and speaker notes.
- Diagnostics. Every tag is listed by part and paragraph with its problems, and in a Word file the fonts the PDF converter would replace are flagged before the first render.
Offer {{ offer.number }} for {{ customer.name }}
{% for item in items %}
{{ item.description }} {{ item.qty }} {{ item.price | money("EUR") }}
{% endfor %}
Total: {{ total | money("EUR") }}Codes and pictures in the document
The qrcode, barcode, epcQr and image helpers place real pictures in Word, sized in pixels or millimetres and never wider than the text, and pageBreak starts a new page. On a slide, a text box that holds only a code or a picture becomes that picture, in the box’s place.
DOCX, PPTX or PDF from one template
The template’s settings pick the output when a request names none. PDFs come from LibreOffice, so pages and line breaks follow the document; embed your fonts in Word when you use ones the converter does not have.
| Template | output |
|---|---|
| HTML (PDF or image) | pdf, png, jpg, webp |
| Word document | docx, pdf |
| PowerPoint presentation | pptx, pdf |
{
"template": "offer",
"output": "docx",
"data": { "customer": { "name": "Olvarest GmbH" }, "offer": { "number": "A-2026-017" } }
}Editing in the app
The template page shows the file, the fonts of a Word file, every tag with its problems, the sample data, the settings, and the versions and channels HTML templates have. A quick preview fills the Word file in your browser as you change the data; the PDF preview renders the saved file on our servers, for Word and PowerPoint. A new Word template can start from an example offer with tags, a new presentation from an example slide.
Templates as files
In a command line project, a template folder holds template.docx or template.pptx instead of template.html. templates pull and push transfer the file, validate and test check the tags offline with readable XML snapshots, and render fills the file on your machine.
npx formfeed validate offer
npx formfeed render offer --output docx
npx formfeed render offer --output pdf # filled locally, converted through the APIConvert office documents to PDF
Send a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OpenDocument file and get a PDF render back, with page ranges, landscape and one page per sheet for spreadsheets. DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS, ODP, DOC, XLS, PPT, RTF and HTML, also HTML saved under a .doc name, are accepted, up to 20 MB. The upload is converted in memory and not stored; the PDF is kept like any render, so merge, watermark and password protection chain on its id. In the app, the Renders page has an Office to PDF action. Details are in the PDF tools documentation.
curl -X POST https://api-eu.formfeed.dev/v1/pdf/convert \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ff_live_..." \
-F file=@report.xlsx \
-F single_page_sheets=trueFrom the SDK and the command line
formfeed pdf convert report.xlsx does the same in a terminal and writes report.pdf; given the render id of a Word or PowerPoint template, it converts that output. The MCP server and the n8n, Zapier and Make integrations fill Word and PowerPoint templates and convert office files too. The Word and PowerPoint guide covers tags, pictures and fonts in detail.

- Which plans have it?
- Word and PowerPoint templates and conversion are on Starter and above. On Free you can create office templates, work on them in the app and test-render them to a marked PDF.
- What does it cost?
- A DOCX or PPTX output is one unit, like an image. A PDF from a Word or PowerPoint template and a converted file follow the PDF rule: one unit per started five pages. Test renders are free.
- What does not work yet?
- Charts, Markdown and partials are for HTML templates only. Repeating whole slides and Excel templates are not available yet. Organisation fonts are not embedded automatically, so embed fonts in Word.
- What happens to my files?
- Files sent for conversion are never stored. Template files are kept privately with their template version and never served by the CDN. The converter runs isolated in Frankfurt and loads nothing from the network, so images an HTML file links to stay empty; files with macros and encrypted files are refused.
